EXPLANATORY NOTES

This Bill would amend the Change of Name Act, 2009 to

·         change the definition of child to a person under the age of 16 years; and

·         lower the age requirement for applying for a change of name from the age of majority to 16 years of age.

Be it enacted by the Lieutenant-Governor and House of Assembly in Legislative Session convened, as follows:

as amended

        1. Paragraph 2(1)(b) of the Change of Name Act, 2009 is repealed and the following substituted:

             (b)  "child" means a person under the age of 16 years;

 

        2. Subsection 4(1) of the Act is repealed and the following substituted:

Eligibility

        4. (1) A person who

             (a)  is resident in the province; and

             (b)  has reached the age of 16 years

may make an application under this Act to change his or her name.
