CHAPTER 32

AN ACT TO AMEND THE COLLEGE ACT, 1996 AND THE MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY ACT

(Assented to December 16, 2004)

Be it enacted by the Lieutenant-Governor and House of Assembly in Legislative Session convened, as follows:

COLLEGE ACT, 1996

1. Subsection 10(4) of the College Act, 1996 is repealed and the following substituted:

(4) Two of the members appointed to the board under subsection (1) shall be students of the college who

(a) are nominated by the executive body of the student association of the college; and

(b) notwithstanding section 11, shall hold office for a period of up to 2 years and if qualified under paragraph (a) are eligible for re-appointment to the board, but after 2 consecutive terms on the board, are no longer eligible for re-appointment.

MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY ACT

2. Paragraph 22(2)(d) of the Memorial University Act is repealed and the following substituted:

(d) 4 members appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor in Council being full-time students of the university who

(i) meet the requirements set out in the regulations, and

(ii) are recommended to the Lieutenant-Governor in Council by the board following the recommendation to the board of one candidate each from the following student unions:

(A) the Memorial University of Newfoundland Students' Union,

(B) the Graduate Students' Union,

(C) the Marine Institute Students' Union, and

(D) the Grenfell College Student Union.

 

3. Paragraph 54(d) of the Act is repealed and the following substituted:

(d) 13 members from the students in attendance at the university, including at least one student from the Marine Institute, one graduate student and one student from Grenfell College, with all members to be chosen in a manner approved by the board.
