Reaching Out

The Objective of the Speaker's Outreach Program is to promote awareness and understanding of the House of Assembly and the democratic process to students in Newfoundland and Labrador through a non-partisan approach.

The unique geographic nature of our province often makes it difficult for some students to come to the Legislature. The Speaker's Outreach Program provides a means of bringing the House of Assembly to those who are not able to visit!



Bringing the Legislature to the Students

Through the Outreach Program the Speaker will visit schools throughout Newfoundland and Labrador by request. During the visit students will learn about the Legislature and the Legislative process. A local MHA may accompany the Speaker (depending on his/her availability) to talk with students about the role of Members.


Topics Covered

The Speaker’s presentation to the students will include the following topics:

Students are also introduced to the traditional garments that are used during Legislative proceedings as they are worn by the Speaker during the presentation.


Learning Package

The House of Assembly wants the Speaker’s Outreach Program experience to be informative and memorable for those who participate. We are developing a comprehensive learning package that includes a variety of supplementary materials that can be utilized in the classroom before and after the visit from the Speaker.


Target Grade Levels

The Speaker’s Outreach Program is targeted to students in Junior High (Grades 7, 8 and 9) and Senior High (Levels I, II and III).


Request a Visit

Schools wishing to participate in the Speaker’s Outreach Program should make a request as early as possible in the school year. It may also be helpful to consult with other schools in your area on their interest in participating in the Program. This would assist the House of Assembly in coordinating visits to schools in the same area. The Speaker’s availability for visits is dependant on various factors including House of Assembly sittings, commitments associated with the role of the Speaker, as well as the Speaker’s duties as an MHA.
