Statutes of Newfoundland and Labrador 2025 Chapter 7

Be it enacted by the Lieutenant-Governor and House of Assembly in Legislative Session convened, as follows:

17 George V, Cap.3 Amdt.

1. The United Church of Canada Act is amended by adding immediately after section 1 the following:

Interpretation

1.1 (1) In this Act,

(a) "Act of incorporation" means The United Church of Canada Act, S.C. 1924, c.100;

(b) "Basis of Union" means the Basis of Union set out in Schedule A, as amended by The United Church of Canada from time to time under section 28(b) of the Act of incorporation;

(d) "Regional Council" means a Regional Council of The United Church of Canada.

(2) In this Act, if the context requires,

(a) a reference to "Conference" or "Presbytery" is also a reference to

(i) a Regional Council, or

(ii) a successor of a Regional Council established in accordance with the process set out in the Basis of Union;

(b) a reference to "Congregation" is also a reference to

(i) a community of faith, or

(ii) a successor of a congregation or community of faith established in the accordance with the process set out in the Basis of Union;

(c) a reference to the "General Council", the "General Council of The United Church" or the "General Council of The United Church of Canada" is also a reference to

(i) the Denominational Council, or

(ii) a successor of that Denominational Council established in accordance with the process set out in the Basis of Union; and

(d) a reference to The Newfoundland and Labrador Conference of The United Church of Canada is also a reference to

(i) the First Dawn Eastern Edge Regional Council, or

(ii) a successor body established in accordance with the process set out in the Basis of Union.

2. (1) Section 3 of Schedule B of the Act is amended by

(a) deleting the words "Presbytery and Conference respectively" and substituting the words "Regional Council"; and

(b) deleting the words "General Council of The United Church of Canada" and substituting the words "Denominational Council".

(2) The description of section 6 of Schedule B of the Act is amended by deleting the words "on the recommendation of the Presbytery with the consent of the conference" and substituting the words "with the consent of the Regional Council".

(3) Section 6 of Schedule B of the Act is amended by

(a) deleting the word "Presbytery" wherever it appears and substituting the words "Regional Council";

(b) deleting the word "Conference" and substituting the words "Regional Council"; and

(4) The description of section 9 of Schedule B of the Act is amended by

(a) deleting the word "Presbytery" and substituting the words "Regional Council"; and

(b) deleting the word "Conference" and substituting the words "Regional Council".

(5) Section 9 of Schedule B of the Act is amended by

(a) deleting the words "public service" and substituting the words "public worship";

(b) deleting the word "Presbytery" wherever it appears and substituting the words "Regional Council";

(d) deleting the words "General Council" and substituting the words "Denominational Council".

(6) Section 11 of Schedule B of the Act is amended by deleting the word "Presbytery" and substituting the words "Regional Council".
