PROFILE:

Calvin Peach was born in 1953 on Flat Islands, Placentia Bay, NL. In the mid-sixties his family was resettled to Grand Bank where he resided for 27 years. Calvin later moved to St. John’s for a short while, and then after meeting his wife Dallas he moved to Norman’s Cove, his current town of residency.

Calvin attended John Burke High School in Grand Bank. After secondary school, Calvin completed courses at Saint Francis Xavier University, NS, in the subjects of Public Speaking, Media/TV/Radio, Labour Relations, Facilitation, Health & Safety, and Organizing.

In his later years of life in Grand Bank, Calvin was the President of the Local FFAW for 14 years. Concurrently, with this presidency, he was the chair of various Committees such as the South Coast District Labour Council, Fisheries Improvement Committee, Fisheries Crisis Committee and the Southern Vice-Chair of the Federation of Labour.

Calvin started his work-life in 1972 as a fish plant worker in receiving and shipping for the Bonavista Cold Storage Company at Grand Bank. In 1985 he worked as part-time Union Business Representative and then in 1986-1988 as organizer for FFAW. Through this position, Calvin worked on many appeals cases with regards to CPP, worker’s compensation, and EI appeals. He also instructed classes on union stewardships. After moving to Norman’s cove, he worked as supervisor on various Government sponsored projects in the Isthmus Development Association geographic area. He worked with the Avalon West School Board as a finished carpenter. From 1990 until the October 9th, 2007 provincial election, he worked as Harbour Supervisor and Administrator for the Long Cove Harbour Authority.

Calvin has also been very active as a volunteer, and through these efforts has gained a vast experience in working for the people. The following list is some of the groups and organizations in which Calvin has been involved:

• 2006-2007, member of the Newfoundland Harbour Authority Advisory Committee/Small Crafts & Harbours.
• 2006-2007, Chair of the Isthmus War Memorial Monument Committee.
• 2005-2007, Chair of the Norman’s Cove–Long Cove Community Centre Inc.
• 2004-2007, Chair of the Isthmus Joint Towns.
• 2004-2006, member of the Discovery Zonal Board (Zone 15) representing Small Towns, Ward 3 from Chapel Arm to Hodge’s Cove.
• 2004-2006, representative on the Discovery Zonal Board (Zone 15) for Fisheries.
• 1999-2007, Vice Chair of the Long Cove Harbour Authority.
• 1996, Councilor for the Town of Norman’s Cove–Long Cove.
• 1996-1999, Member of the Long Cove Harbour Authority.
• 1996-2002, Chairman of the Norman’s Cove–Long Cove Beach Festival Committee.
• 1991-1997, Chairman of the Norman’s Cove–Long Cove Sports & Recreation Commission.
