EXPLANATORY NOTES

This Bill would amend the Parliamentary Assistant Act and the Parliamentary Secretaries Act.

The Parliamentary Assistant Act would be amended to confirm that the Parliamentary Assistant to the Premier serves without remuneration payable in accordance with the office.

The Parliamentary Secretaries Act would be amended to

·         repeal a provision requiring that no more than 4 parliamentary secretaries hold office at one time; and

·         confirm that parliamentary secretaries serve without remuneration payable in accordance with the office.

Be it enacted by the Lieutenant-Governor and House of Assembly in Legislative Session convened, as follows:

PARLIAMENTARY ASSISTANT ACT

        1. Section 5 of the Parliamentary Assistant Act is repealed and the following substituted:

No remuneration

        5. Except as provided for in section 6, no remuneration is payable to a Parliamentary Assistant to the Premier by virtue of holding that office.

 

        2. Section 6 of the Act is repealed and the following substituted:

Expenses

        6. (1) A Parliamentary Assistant to the Premier shall be paid the expenses actually and reasonably incurred by him or her in carrying out his or her duties.

             (2)  The expenses referred to in subsection (1) shall be paid by the Minister of Finance out of the Consolidated Revenue Fund.

        3. Subsection 3(2) of the Parliamentary Secretaries Act is repealed.

 

        4. Section 6 of the Act is repealed and the following substituted:

No remuneration

        6. (1) Except as provided for in subsection (2), no remuneration is payable to a parliamentary secretary by virtue of holding that office.
