Pre-Confederation Journals

The Journals are the official record of the daily business of the legislature. They are similar to minutes in that they are a record of what was done, rather than what was said.

For the 1st to 44th General Assemblies, Journal entries for each session are compiled into one volume. For the 45th General Assembly to current session, daily Journal entries are available in calendar format.

Journals are not available for 1842 and 1847 (the Legislature did not sit), or from 1934 to 1948 (Commission of Government)

Commission of Government 1933-1949

No Journals were produced during the Commission of Government.

Prior to Commission of Government, the legislature was bicameral (consisting of two legislative chambers) – the elected House of Assembly, and an appointed Legislative Council. During the 1833-1933 timeframe, Journals are available for both the House of Assembly and the Legislative Council. When Commission of Government was instituted in 1934, this bicameral legislative structure ended.

In 1841, the Colonial Office amalgamated the House of Assembly and Legislative Council. The Journals for the 3rd General Assembly (1843-1846) were published under the one title : Journal of the General Assembly.
